Do you remember the first time?

I am going to see Pulp next week here in New York and I was reading about gig they just played at London’s Royal Albert Hall for the venerable Teenage Cancer Trust. They opened their set with their 1994 classic “Do You Remember the First Time?”. This got me thinking about the first time I ever used the internet… around 1994 too if I remember rightly, in the British Library of Political & Economic Science at the London School of Economics, where I was studying at the time. Those were the days: VAX computers and Pegasus email.

Well anyway, I think the first site I ever went to was, oddly enough, the Beastie Boys now defunct record label Grand Royal. It was deathly slow: here is what it looked like a few years later in 1998. I never purchased the t-shirt I was after that day – for that I had to rely on the ever trusty Camden Market.

Do you remember the first time you ever used the internet, the website you visited in those heady days? If so, leave a comment below. If you can’t, marvel at how the internet used to look back in those halcyon pre 2000 days. What’s not to like about an MC Hammer animated gif?
